Description

Ayres House is a house dating from the mid-19th century, situated on East Street in Crewkerne. The building is constructed of squared and coursed limestone, with a Ham Hill stone plinth and dressings; it has a slate roof with stone coping and stacks. The plan is of a double-depth layout.

Architecturally, the house is of a Classical style, presenting a symmetrical 3-window front over two storeys and a basement. A flight of steps leads to double doors, above which is a large semi-circular overlight contained within a round-arched doorcase with a Gibbs surround. Rusticated quoins are present, as is a platband at cill level, and a moulded eaves cornice. The windows are late-19th century, 2/2-pane sashes with keystones to the architraves. A tall, round-arched stair window with margin panes is located on the right return. The interior of the house has not been inspected.

Attached to the house on the left and to a gate pier with a pyramidal cap on the right are spearhead area railings with acorn finials and scroll supports, all set on a Ham Hill stone plinth. The gate pier is attached to the house by a low wall.
