Description
The White Horse Public House, located on Bay Hill in Ilminster, dates back to the 17th century and was significantly altered in the early 19th century. The front of the building is stuccoed with a plain tile roof, stepped stone copings, and a brick ridge stack in the centre, with a truncated stack to the left. The building has a 5-unit plan and a 5-window front. A C20 six-panel door is located to the left of the centre, set within a moulded architrave with a bracketed hood, and an 8/8-pane sash window sits above, featuring a round arch and interlaced glazing bars. The remaining windows are tripartite 6/6-pane sashes within raised surrounds, except for a 3-light leaded casement on the first floor to the far right, positioned above a C20 vent and a small door; all these right-side windows are contained within raised, square-headed architraves. A swept wall on the left conceals single-storey WCs. The rear of the building is slate-hung and features rubblestone and brick returns. A C20 two-storey rubblestone wing adjoins the rear to the right. Inside, most of the interior has been altered, though the attic staircase and wide floorboards in the attic remain, along with nails fixed to the rafters that once supported a lath and plaster ceiling.
