Description

The Forge is a house and attached former shop that dates back to the 15th century, with remodeling in the 16th century and a refronting on the gable end in the late 18th century. An early 19th-century extension was added. The building is constructed of random rubble with rusticated quoins and features a double Roman tile roof, along with two brick stacks and an octagonal ashlar stack on the rear wing. The house has a traditional medieval alignment, with the gable facing the street and a symmetrical facade created by the 18th-century cross wing.

It stands two storeys high with three bays, featuring sash windows with glazing bars set in plain stone surrounds. The central door opening is framed similarly, leading to a six-panelled door. The early 19th-century extension on the right is of lower height, made of coursed rubble with a pantile roof. It has a single flush-mounted sash window with glazing bars on the upper floor and a shop front with six lights on the ground floor, including an integral six-panelled door with the top two panels glazed.

At the rear, there is a 15th-century wing that is one storey and attic high, consisting of one bay and featuring a four-light hollow-moulded stone-mullioned window on the ground floor. A door opening to the left leads to a plank door. Inside, the building has a moulded six-panelled ceiling that was inserted into the open hall in the 16th century, and there is a fireplace with a four-centred stone surround on the first floor.
