Description
The Highbridge War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected and dedicated in 1921 to honor the 67 men from the parish of Highbridge who died while serving their country. It includes later additions for the Second World War, commemorating 19 fallen soldiers from that conflict.
The memorial is made of stone and features a tall square pedestal, which is inscribed on one side with "AD 1921" and is set on a stone base. At the top, it has a decorative bell-shaped capping stone that is topped with a Latin cross. Marble tablets are attached to three sides of the pedestal.
On the upper section of the front face of the pedestal, there is a marble tablet with the main dedicatory inscription: "ERECTED IN GRATEFUL & AFFECTIONATE MEMORY TO THE MEN OF HIGHBRIDGE WHO FELL WHILST SERVING IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The lower section of the front face, as well as the left and right faces, display additional tablets bearing the names of the fallen from the First World War. There is also a tablet attached to the base of the memorial inscribed with "ALSO IN THE 1939-1945 WAR (NAMES)."
