Description
No. 23 Market Square is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 16th and 18th centuries and features painted Flemish-bond brickwork with a plain tile roof and a brick stack on the right gable end. The building has a double-depth plan, with an older wing at the rear. It stands three storeys high and has a two-window range. The second-floor windows are 3/6-pane sashes with flat gauged brick arches above, while the first-floor windows are 6/6-pane sashes. On the ground floor, there is a set-back six-panel door with glazing at the top, which has a circa 1800 knocker. The shopfront, likely from the late 19th century, features a set-back door on the inside right, flanked by plate-glass windows separated by thin colonnettes, with Art Nouveau tracery at the top. The interior has not been inspected, but it is known to contain three curved principal rafters with trenched purlins to the left of the upper passage.
