Description
The Challen and Holman monuments are a pair of chest tombs located in the churchyard, 5 and 8 metres north of the north transept of the Church of St Mary the Virgin.
The Challen Monument, situated 8 metres north of the transept, dates from the early 18th century and is made of Ham stone. Its base is buried, and it features panels on each face with wave-mould frames, a half-drop division, and fluted pilasters on the sides. The top is hipped with moulded coving and rounded leading edges. This tomb commemorates --- Challen, who died in 1729.
The Holman Monument, located 5 metres north of the transept, is from the late 18th century and is also constructed of Ham stone. It has a stepped base and a moulded plinth, with panelled sides—one on each end and two on each flank. The end panels are set on a curve and are adorned with deep-fluted Ionic pilasters. The shallow hipped top has moulded coving and rounded leading edges. This tomb commemorates Thomas Holman, Gentleman, who died in 1792, and his wife Mary, who died in 1799.
