Description
The Shepton Mallet War Memorial is a commemorative monument erected in November 1920 to honor the victims of the First World War and later, the Second World War. Designed by architect CFW Denning from Bristol, with stone carving by Lewis Smallcorn of Bath, the memorial is made of Portland stone. It features a largely plain, rectangular column that stands 23 feet high, topped with a Doric entablature and a square frieze. On the north side of the monument, there are two bronze memorial plaques, along with a stone-carved wreath at the top and the word 'Pax' engraved lower down the column. The memorial is located in the town center at the junction of High Street, Station Road, and Cannards Grave Road. This straightforward First World War Memorial has significant local connections to the town of Shepton Mallet.
