Description

The stables and cart shed, located immediately northwest of the Seymour Arms in Witham Friary, were built around 1866 for the Duke of Somerset. The structure is made of coursed limestone with red brick detailing and features a plain clay tile hipped roof adorned with bands of shaped tiles and crested ridge tiles.

The building has a plan that includes a range of stables with a central entrance, external stairs on the right leading to a loft door, and a one-bay cart shed on the left end. The exterior is two storeys high with a three-bay southeast front. It has small 16-pane sash windows with cambered brick arches, small keystones, and stone sills. The brick quoins and stringcourse are also notable, although the ground floor sashes are missing their glazing bars. There is a central plank door in a similar opening. The right side features external stone stairs leading to the loft door on the first floor, while the lower single-storey one-bay cart shed on the right has a hipped roof and an open front filled with boarding.

The interior has not been inspected. This building remains an unaltered range of stables associated with an estate farm and public house, contributing to its group value.
