Description

Tolleys Farmhouse is a detached house dating from the 15th century, with some modifications. It is built from local stone rubble, with some cob, and is rendered and colourwashed. The roof is half-hipped and thatched, featuring brick chimney stacks. The house is single-storey with an attic and consists of four bays. The windows are mostly casement style, with horizontal bars; there are three-light windows below, except for the fourth bay which has a two-light window. Above, bays one, three, and four have two-light windows set into thatched dormers, while bay two features an earlier pattern four-light casement also set into thatch. There is a 20th-century porch with a 20th-century doorway located between bays two and three. Additional casement windows are present in the north gable, and there is a lean-to at the rear.

Inside, the farmhouse has a deep-chamfered crossbeam in the lower ceilings, one of which has a long step and runouts, along with sockets and mortices for wattle and doorframes. There are two old simple fireplaces, both adapted. The roof frame consists of four pairs of jointed crucks with trenched purlins, and there is one wattle-and-daub partition on the first floor. Originally a single house, it was later subdivided into two or three houses but has since been restored to one property. The foundations of a previous farmhouse on this site are said to survive to the west. The settlement has been recorded since 1170.
