Description

Underhill Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of roughly cut and squared ham stone, with a thatched roof, half-hipped on the south gable and fully hipped to the north. Brick chimney stacks are also present. The farmhouse is a single-storey building with an attic, arranged with three bays. The first bay, under the hip, features a three-light horizontal-bar casement window under a timber lintel and a boarded door in the north end. The second bay has a similar window below and a two-light window above, set into the thatch. The third bay has a three-light leaded casement window under a timber lintel, with a three-light horizontal-bar casement above. A boarded door is situated in a heavy frame in the second bay, to the right of, and sharing a lintel with the window. The interior was reported to contain a timber-framed gable to the north (the south wall having been demolished and rebuilt in the 19th century), and two jointed-cruck trusses. Further details include a six-panel hall ceiling with deeply chamfered beams, fireplaces from the 16th century with earlier smoke hoods, and a stud and plank partition to the entry passage. The Group Value context is that it’s recognised as an important example of its type.
