Description

Atherstone Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse that has been divided and dates from the 17th century and later. It is built from cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings and features a thatched roof with a stepped coped gable on the west side and a plain coped gable on the east. The building has brick and stone slab chimney stacks and a 'T'-shaped plan. It stands two storeys high with five bays and irregular window arrangements. The hollow-chamfered mullioned windows have separate labels, with four-light lower bays from two to five, and a reconstructed stone window in bay one. Above these are four-light horizontal bar casements. To the right of bay three, there is an older boarded and studded door in a heavy frame. The eaves level stonework shows signs of a raised roof, and there is a blocked doorway between bays one and two, as well as a further blocked doorway in the west gable. The east gable features a moulded string course between floors and a blocked window at a lower level. There is a later lean-to extension at the rear against the return wing, which includes a small square bay window from the late 18th century with beaded mullions, along with 19th-century margined windows and French doors. The interior has not been seen. Approximately two metres in front of the house, there are wrought-iron railings on a low stone base wall, featuring alternate Gothic-arched hoops and spearpoints, with urn finials on the gateposts opposite the doorway. The matching gates and the curved return to the southwest corner of the house enhance the overall setting of the property.
