Description
St John's Court is a workhouse, dating from the early to mid-19th century and designed by S T Welch. It has been converted into flats. The building is constructed of ashlar with a slate roof, some areas of which are covered with bitumen. It is built in a T-shaped plan and displays Gothic Revival and Tudoresque architectural styles.
The building has two storeys and consists of 1:5:1:1:1:5:1 bays, with the bays to each side set within projecting gabled wings that have copings. The central three bays also project, forming a more elaborate three-storey block which contains the entrance. The windows are predominantly casements of two lights, set under stopped labels. Some window openings have been blocked, and some now contain 20th-century metal casements. The left wing features window openings with four-centred heads, while the right wing has 20th-century casements. The central block is topped with an elaborate gable and features a canted bay. It includes two- and four-light mullioned and transomed windows under four-centred heads with simple Y tracery. Buttresses flank each side of the central block, incorporating offsets. The central door opening is within a four-centred stone surround with a lancet window on each side, all under a stopped label supported by five brackets, topped with a triangular pediment. The entrance is accessed via double-panelled doors. The building was undergoing considerable alterations at the time of a resurvey in December 1983.
