Description

Two shops, numbers 4 and 6 Fore Street, were built in the 1880s and 1890s. They are constructed of Flemish-bond brick with stone bands and dressings, topped by a plain tile hipped roof with terra-cotta finials. Elaborate ornamental brickwork and projecting terracotta dragons decorate the corners of a centrally located ridge stack.

The buildings are arranged over three storeys and have a symmetrical three-window facade. Two forward-facing gables feature deep, modillioned eaves and cornices, each with an oculus in the apex. Stone bands are visible at lintel level, and string courses run along the cill level. The second floor has two three-light stone mullioned and transomed windows with four small panes in the upper lights, each topped by a wide, moulded segmental arch with carved blocking and a plain keystone. A central single-light window with six small panes above the transom sits between these. The first floor features a similar window centrally, flanked by two-light canted bays with stone mullions and transoms, carved corbelling below, and cornices with blocking courses above.

The 20th-century shopfronts are flanked by pilasters with rusticated blocking, topped by urn finials on foliate-panelled blocks. The interiors were not inspected. The buildings are included on the list for their group value.
