Mill And Chimney Adjoining Prowse'S Villa

The building known as Prowse's Mill is a disused textile mill and chimney, dating from around 1800, with the chimney constructed in the mid to late 19th century. It is built of red sandstone random rubble with a plinth of dressed stone voussoirs, topped with a slate roof and coped verges. The mill faces south and has a cottage attached to its south-east corner, which is not included in this listing. To the east are the remains of an engine house and the chimney.

The mill is three storeys high and has two bays, featuring segmental headed 8x6-pane sash windows that are boarded up internally, with many panes of glass broken. On the left side, there are four segmental headed sash windows on the upper storey, along with remnants of a shaft drive wheel; the lower storey is obscured by the remains of an outbuilding. The right side has a square headed loft opening flanked by semi-circular headed windows, and there is an inserted doorway on the first floor, while the ground floor entrance is concealed by brick outbuildings that extend north to the chimney.

Inside, there are shallow brick vaults supported by cast iron columns. The remains of the red brick engine house are only partially visible, and the red brick chimney is square in plan, flaring out at the base, with a dog tooth moulded plinth and a moulded cornice.
