Description
South Cottage is a detached house dating from the 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the 18th and early 20th centuries. It is constructed of Cary stone, squared and dressed with Doulting stone, and has hipped Welsh slate roofs. The building is arranged in an 'L' shape, with a three-bay road elevation. The front of the house has ovolo-mould mullioned windows of three lights, except for the lower outer bays, which have four lights; these windows have labels above them. A continuous string course runs above the lower level windows. A six-panel door is set within a triple-keystoned architrave, and is surmounted by a moulded stone hood on brackets, and bears a Sun Insurance plate. The south end of the house is double-chamfered, with 16 and 20-pane sash windows in the 20th century set within voussoired and keystoned flat arches. The return wings have sash windows in architraves on the north side. The central block of the house dates from the 18th century, while the taller end block, with a hipped plain clay tile roof, was built in the early 20th century. A late 20th-century conservatory protects the main entrance on the south side of a return wing. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
