Description

Cumnock Terrace is a terrace of twelve houses built in 1877 by John Boyd for his workers. The houses are constructed of coursed Ham stone with freestone dressings, and have a clay tile roof with crested ridge tiles, finials, and stone coped gables. Large red brick axial stacks are present.

The terrace is in a Victorian Gothic style. The north-east front has a symmetrical design with two bays projecting at each end. These projecting bays feature full-height canted bays with splayed sides, recessed panels displaying shields with the monogram JB, the date 1877, and the inscription “Cumnock Terrace”. A carved dragon corbel supports a large gable above each canted bay, and a shallow timber-framed oriel with a hipped roof is incorporated into the inner bay. Lean-to porches are located in the inner angles, with hipped canopies over the doorways, which generally have plank doors and ornate wrought-iron hinges. Most windows are four-pane sashes, some of which have been replaced, set within chamfered stone mullion surrounds and are paired at the centre. The south-west rear elevation demonstrates twin gables to the left and right, a lower ground level, small service wings, walls enclosing small yards, and small hipped roof wings with tall, narrow stair windows.

Stone garden area walls with elaborate cast-iron railings and gates are positioned in front of the terrace, with stone gate piers marking the ends of the rear service road. The interior of the houses has not been inspected, although No.6 is recorded to have an original staircase with square newels and turned finials, as well as at least one cast-iron chimneypiece.

Cumnock Terrace was built in 1877 by John Boyd for the workers at his horse hair factory in Castle Cary. It is believed that his son, John Stuart Boyd, and his accountant, William Macmillan, occupied the two larger end houses.
