Description

Hillcrest School House, formerly known as The Rectory, is a detached house that dates back to the 18th century and is now used as a school. It is constructed from Cary stone that is cut and squared, with Doulting stone dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof between coped gables. The building has a double roof plan, is two storeys high, and consists of five bays, with the central bay projecting slightly. It has a plinth eaves course and 12-pane sash windows with architraved surrounds, although the glazing bars have been removed at the lower level. The central entrance has a six-panel door, four of which are glazed, set within an architraved surround topped with a pedimented hood supported by console brackets. There are two lean-to extensions on the west gable. While the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have fielded-panel internal doors and matching features.

In front of the house, approximately four metres away, there are wrought iron railings that likely date from the 19th century. These railings feature necked spear points and square urn-type finials on scroll-braced standards, with double standards that have diamond pattern bracing at the central gateway. The matching gate includes Greek key ornamentation on the middle rail, enhancing the overall setting of the house within the streetscape.
