Description
The Former United Reformed Church, built in 1873 for John Spencer of Oakhill Brewery, is a church constructed from rough faced sandstone rubble with dressed quoins and slate roofs featuring crested ridges. It is designed in a free geometric style and has a cruciform shape with angled transept ends and an apsed chancel. The church includes a belfry porch linked to the north aisle and a 3-bay aisled nave with clerestory windows. Notable architectural features include plate tracery, a west window with two pairs of cusped lancets and foliated occuli, and an arcaded 5-light window set in an ovolo dado below. The doorway is designed in a style reminiscent of around 1300, featuring two orders. The tower is divided into two stages and has two pairs of lights for the ringing chamber, an elaborate roof in two stages, a separate clock storey, and an upper leaded spirlet with squat corner pinnacles. Inside, the principal feature is the galleried first floor of the chancel, which has a vestry below. This church was formerly known as Oakhill Congregational Church and is nicknamed the "Little Cathedral."
