Description

The Dower House is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, built in the 18th century and extended in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed stone rubble with freestone dressings and features a slate roof with stone coped gable ends and a moulded stone eaves cornice. The rear wing is clad in Bridgwater tiles.

The building has a two-room plan for the front range, with a rear service wing and a central entrance passage, although the passage and the right-hand room are now combined. The exterior is two storeys high, with a symmetrical three-window south front that includes small two-light sashes and casements with glazing bars set in moulded stone frames. There is a central first-floor small Venetian window in a stone frame, with its central round-headed light breaking the moulded stone eaves cornice. Below this is an ashlar gabled porch with a 20th-century glazed inner door. The west side features 20th-century casements and a large porch, while the east side of the rear wing has a plank door in a chamfered stone frame with a Tudor arch, accompanied by two-light stone windows to the right. The gable end of the rear wing has similar stone windows to the right with casements and a lean-to outshut on the left.

Inside, there are various chamfered and unchamfered ceiling beams, and a stone flag floor in the stair hall. Late 19th-century joinery includes panelled doors on the first floor. The roof over the front range has three bays and features two trusses that may incorporate earlier reused timbers.
