Description

Westowe Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was renovated in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble and features three right-hand bays, all rendered, with thatched roofs that are hipped to the right. There is a stone stack on the left and a brick stack on the right. The building has an "L"-shaped plan, with the shorter arm facing east. It likely started as a two-cell structure with a cross passage on the east and a single-cell block to the north, later joined by an independently roofed addition within the same century.

The farmhouse is two stories high with four bays. It has 20th-century three-light casement windows, and the outer bay on the right has a recessed 20th-century porch and door. The original entrance is in the center, featuring a 20th-century wooden gabled trellis porch. The long left return shows butt joints and various additions, while the rear elevation of the main block is reputed to have a three-light ovolo moulded window.

Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered beams with enriched stops. To the right of the cross passage is an open fireplace with a bressumer, and there are openings to the left and right, with the former having a tiny lancet window now illuminated by inserted windows. To the left of the cross passage is another fireplace with a large stepped stack, originally external, and a four-panel compartment ceiling to the north with chamfered beams and a fireplace in the room beyond. The evolution of the house is not yet fully understood.

The walls consist of red sandstone random rubble flanking the left entrance, which sweeps down and connects to a curved wall that joins the wall fronting the road to the southeast. There is a round-headed opening with a plank door in the center of this curved wall.
