Description
Lydeard Down Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. It features roughcast over rubble, a thatched roof, and brick stacks at the left gable end and to the left of the entrance, with brick and stone on the right gable end. The original layout is not clear, but the west end may have served as a tap room before the building was converted into two cottages, now functioning as a single dwelling facing south. The cottage is one and a half storeys high with irregularly placed windows, including four dormers with two and three lights, and ground floor three-light casements flanking a 20th-century partially glazed plank door on the right. There is a raking buttress, a two-light casement, and a 20th-century thatched projection on the left, which incorporates an oriel and a glazed porch for the door. Inside, there are six pairs of principals with collars, some resting on the original wall plate, along with some chamfered beams and evidence of several blocked doors and windows on the north wall.
