Description

No. 32, also known as Priory House, is a large town house that is part of a row of buildings. It possibly had its front updated in the late 18th century. The house is constructed from local stone that has been rendered and features ashlar dressings, with a colourwashed finish. It has a stone slate roof situated between coped gables and brick chimney stacks at each end. The building stands two storeys tall with an attic and consists of five bays.

There is a plinth, band courses, and pilaster strips. The first bay has a blocked doorway below and a blind window above. The other bays contain large 12-pane sash windows set in architraved surrounds, each topped with flat hoods. In the third bay, there is a low and wide six-panel door within a stone surround, flanked by fluted attached Doric columns, an entablature, and a flat hood. Between the third and fourth bays, there is a late 20th-century glazed door with a non-matching hood. The interior has not been seen.

To the west of the building, there is a three-metre-high screen wall with plain coping. This wall features a former pedestrian entrance and a coach entrance, both of which have blocked segmental arched surrounds, with the larger one having a keystone. The wall connects with No. 34 and screens a late 20th-century wing that is set back and not included in the listing. Additionally, set into the west gable of the house is a stone with an upside-down heart-shaped recess inscribed "D-TM-1797." This appears to be a recent insert and may originate from a demolished building, of which only the street wall remains.
