Description

The Chantry is a country house built around 1826 by John Pinch for James Fussell. It is constructed from Bath stone ashlar and features a hipped slate roof behind a cornice and parapet, with ashlar stacks. The house has a rectangular, plain Classical facade with three bays; the central bay is three storeys tall, while the outer wings are two storeys. The windows are sash with glazing bars, and the ground floor windows in the outer bays are set in shallow semi-circular headed recesses with impost bands. Above these openings, there are blank sections with false glazing bars and a sill band.

The central entrance has a broad semi-circular headed opening with double six-panelled doors, the upper two panels being glazed, flanked by sidelights and a fanlight, all within a fluted surround. A semi-circular Roman Doric portico supported by two pairs of columns and pilasters is present, along with low ornamental wrought iron railings around the top. To the right side, there is a one-storey hipped roofed wing with a single bay and a door opening featuring a four-panelled door. The ground falls away to the rear, which has a basement and three bays, with a full height semi-circular bow in the centre bay. The window openings at the rear have additional low decorative railings on their sills.

Inside, the house retains original doors, fireplaces, decorative plasterwork, and a staircase.
