Description

Mells Manor is a manor house built in the 16th century for Edward Horner, with alterations made in the 17th century. It was partially demolished around 1780 and later restored by Sir Edwin Lutyens after 1900, including the addition of a muniment room in 1931. The building is constructed from Doulting rubble with dressed quoins and features ashlar stacks with moulded caps, some of which are hexagonal. A small wooden bell-cote with a domed lead roof and finial is located on the ridge.

The original "H"-plan of the manor remains, showcasing Elizabethan architecture. The structure is two stories high with an attic and consists of five bays, with attic openings in the coped gables. The left two bays project slightly forward and are supported by diagonal corner buttresses, while the right two bays are defined by narrow polygonal buttresses. The façade includes string courses and some stopped labels above the heads of the windows, which are mullion and transom style with leaded lights. The entrance features a door opening in a 19th-century flat-roofed ashlar porch, with paired 4-centred archways to the left and a projecting bay with a blank 2-light mullioned window to the right.

On the left return, there is a single-storey muniment room, and the right return has a two-storey angular bay. The rear gardens are enclosed by attached rubble and brick walls with moulded cappings. An enclosed area to the east has three 4-centred gate openings in stone surrounds with plank doors, while the south end features rusticated brick piers topped with ball finials and a blocked opening between.
