Description
No 4 on New Street is a house that is part of a row, built around 1470 for Abbot Selwood, with later alterations. It is constructed from coursed and squared Doulting rubble, featuring an eaves course and a stone tile roof. The right side has a coped verge with a saddlestone, and there is a central rubble stack along with a tall stack rising from the front eaves. The house has a cross passage plan and is two storeys high with three bays.
On the first floor, there is a two-light moulded stone mullioned window, with each light having a trefoil head, located to the right. To the left on the ground floor, there is a later four-light chamfered mullioned window. The remaining openings are 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars inserted into the surrounds of former mullioned windows. There are two door openings, one to the right featuring a chamfered stone surround and plank doors.
The right return has further two and three-light moulded stone mullioned windows with leaded lights. At the rear, there are three additional trefoil-headed mullioned windows, a canted stair turret with a pent roof, and a four-centred chamfered stone door opening with a carving of an angel above.
