Description
Manor House is a country villa built around 1840 for the Colthurst family. It has a rubble core with brick dressings, and the main block is faced in Flemish bond Bridgwater brick, featuring prominent rusticated quoins, a projecting first floor band, wide bracketed eaves, and hipped double Roman tile roofs with brick stacks, some arranged in groups. The entrance front has a symmetrical layout with one bay on the left that is blank and has a false window on the first floor, while the right side features a projecting 16-pane sash window on the first floor and a 24-pane triple-hing sash window on the ground floor, both with stepped voussoirs. There is a door opening on the left, which is a panelled and glazed door with a fan-light, leading to a verandah supported by chamfered wooden piers and covered by a double Roman tile roof that extends to the left on the garden front. To the right is a service wing with four bays, designed in a plain but matching style. The interior boasts high-quality features, particularly notable fireplaces and a staircase. The Colthurst family were significant producers of tiles and bricks in Bridgwater during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
