Description

Combe Mill Farmhouse is a late 16th- to early 17th-century mill and millhouse, altered in the 18th century and mid-20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with a clay tile darn block, half-hipped to the right, and a pantiled crosswing to the right. Brick stacks are located on the gable ends and to the left of the cross passage separating the dwelling from the mill building, with a lower crosswing abutting. The plan incorporates a two-cell and cross passage layout, with a further cross passage dividing the millhouse from the mill building and an abutting lower crosswing, possibly a bakery.

The main block is two and one-and-a-half storeys and four bays, featuring 3-light C20 casements. Ground floor windows are 3-light casements between plank doors. A bread oven projects from the gable end of the crosswing, and a gabled dormer rises below the eaves. A ground floor window is located to the right of the entrance. The rear features pantiled wings.

The interior includes remains of machinery in the mill end bay of the main block, to the right. An overshot water wheel has been removed, but the course of the leat is still visible. The building retains chamfered beams with run-out stops and enriched stops. It appears a bakery was attached to the mill. The whole building forms a picturesque group.
