Surridge Farmhouse and Outbuidings Adjoining on West Front

Surridge Farmhouse and its adjoining outbuildings date back to the 16th century, with some internal alterations made in the 18th century. The farmhouse was further altered and enlarged in the late 19th to early 20th century. It features a rendered exterior over rubble and cob, topped with an asbestos slate roof that is hipped to the left over the adjoining outhouse and hipped on the 19th-century range that returns to the left. There is a roughcast external stack on the right gable end and a lateral stack rising at the rear of the central elevation, which is masked by outshots. The building has a T-plan layout, consisting of three cells and a cross passage, with a roughly coeval wing at the rear flanked by outshots. A stair has been inserted into the cross passage, and entry is now via the left gable end, which includes a cider house and loft above.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with two bays on the left and four bays on the right. The right side features 19th-century three-light wooden casements, a half-glazed door in the third bay, and a left unglazed two-light opening with a 20th-century window to the right. The ground floor includes a small two-light unglazed steeply chamfered mullioned window and a wide plank door with long hinges, possibly from the 17th century, opening to the right, along with a plank door to the gable end stack with a recessed porch.

Inside, the building has been altered in the late 19th to early 20th century but still retains many interesting features. The kitchen fireplace has a blocked bressummer beam with modern grates, and the hall has a four-panel steeply chamfered compartment ceiling. The inner room contains a roughly chamfered stud and plank partition, and there is an 18th-century raised and fielded panel door leading to the outshot. The dairy wing and kitchen have chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, while a fielded panel cupboard is located beside the right gable end fireplace on the first floor. Two pairs of jointed cruck trusses are visible, forming the central bay, and there are unchamfered beams in the cider house. Additionally, there is a two-bay returned loft over the stable with an external stair set in the angle, and the building is set into a hillside, showing evidence of internal damp.
