Description

The remains of the Church of St James are from a former parish church built in the 14th century. The structure features random rubble made from local stone and includes quoins. The west tower and the remnants of the walls of the nave and chancel stand about 500 millimeters high and extend 20 meters long. At the time of the survey in May 1985, the concrete coping blocks were in poor condition.

The three-stage unbuttressed tower has a rebuilt parapet with gabled corners and offsets at each stage. The arched head bell-openings are blocked on all sides except for the south. There are voussoirs visible at the blocked west window opening, and evidence of a moulded plinth can be seen on the west face where the land slopes away. A 19th-century buttress is located in the south-east corner, and there is a Ham stone tablet on the south front with an illegible inscription.

On the east front, the offsets of the former nave roof are present, along with a 4-centred tower arch that has remains of trefoil-headed panelling on the jamb. The arch is filled with an inserted rubble wall that contains a reset unglazed trefoil-headed two-light window. A pointed doorframe with double roll moulding and 19th-century iron gates is also present. There is a panel on the inner wall of the blocked west window, which is illegible. Evidence of the original entrance can be found on the south front, and the chancel wall on the south front is set in slightly from the nave but remains continuous on the north front. A reproduction of a 19th-century photograph shows the church intact, although it was in a very poor state of repair at that time.
