CHISELBOROUGH CP NORTH STREET (West side) Manor Farmhouse and gateway about 30 metres south

GV II

Detached farmhouse Dated 1861, by R H Shout for Ilchester estate. Ham stone ashlar with bands of lighter stone; hipped Welsh slate roofs with heavy moulded stone hip and ridge pieces; stone chimney stacks. H-plan, 2-storeys with attic, 3 bays. In a quasi-C16 style. Plinth, eaves coving: thin chamfer mullioned windows in chamfered recesses without labels; to lower outer bays 4-light with transomes, segmental relieving arches over, and above 3-light flat oriel windows with false gables, coped, with quatrefoil vent panels and pinnacles; recessed centre bay has 5-light panel across whole bay above, of which 3 panels are actually windows; all windows honeycombed 'leaded' - possibly with cast iron units: to lower centre bay a 4-centre arched doorway across 3 bays of panel, with carved spandrils, sidelights and 5 toplights; above this another false gable with larger pinnacle and circular vent in which is set a crown with an 'I'. Interior not examined, but apparently little changed. About 30 metres south of house a low boundary wall with 4 gate piers linked by carved sweeps, the piers square with bell hip caps, also similar wing wall and piers attached to south east corner of house, adding to the setting. Part of a mid C19 model farm layout - the whole illustrated on an architect's projection drawing, a copy of which is in the house: the farm buildings to the west now much altered and important parts demolished.
