Description

Rowley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations from the 19th century, and it may have been remodelled from an earlier dwelling. The building is constructed from coursed rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a hipped roof covered with Welsh slate, along with an off-centre ridge stack. It has a linear plan.

The northeast elevation has a two-storey, four-bay front, with a doorway located between the first and second bays on the left. This panelled door is set within a stone surround with a shallow lintel. There are four windows on each floor, all of which are horned 19th-century glazing bar sashes with eight panes over eight, framed by substantial stone surrounds. To the right of the doorway, there is a window made up of coupled sashes divided by a single mullion. The northwest gable features a single doorway and a 19th-century two-light mullioned window on the first floor. A straight joint in the wall masonry on the left side of the gable indicates a change in construction. The variation in coursing patterns in the main elevation, the low position of the doorway relative to the height of the window heads, and the placement of the single stack suggest that there was an earlier plan behind the remodelled front.

The interior has not been inspected but is believed to contain elements of interest. Rowley Farmhouse is thought to have served as the Home Farm for the nearby Rowley Hall, which is located to the southwest, and it plays a significant role in the overall setting.
