Description
This is a range of buildings dating from road improvements made in 1811, and they are generally similar in style to numbers 1 to 8 on the opposite side of the street. The buildings are three storeys high with attics, built of painted ashlar with a continuous cornice and parapet that slopes downwards at each level change. They have slate roofs. Generally, each building has two windows, which are sash windows with glazing bars set within reveals. A moulded string course runs above the first floor, and pilasters are placed between the buildings; number 19 has a central pilaster.
Number 19 retains only one sash window, the rest having been replaced with wide, marginally glazed casements. It features a fine butcher's shop-front from the 1920s. This features tiled or marble finishes, oval engaged Ionic columns, a modillion cornice, and a segmental panel in the centre with a projecting carved head of a cow. There are two entrances and two windows to the shop front. Number 20 retains an arched doorway to the left, with a six-panel raised and fielded door, a radiating fanlight, and a keystone. A good mid-19th-century shop-front is present with ornate brackets to the fascia, scalloped medallions, a shaped panel, a recessed central entrance, and flanking windows with a curved glazing pattern.
Number 22 has three windows. A segment-headed throughpassage is present. An oval rainwater head is located at the rear. Number 23 has a central ground-floor doorway with side lights and palmette caps suggesting a fanlight, above a square overlight. Reeded pilaster strips are present on the door. Flanking ground-floor windows have piers and a fascia with a cornice, inset angled bays with central radiating glazing (all modern). A projecting early 20th-century porch is supported by turned columns, with flanking steps, ornamental railings, and trellis work below the cornice.
Number 24 has a left-hand section that appears to be a complete house front, including a basement. The right-hand section projects with a radiused corner, and features five sash windows in architraves, with two being blind on the first floor. A modern shop-front is located to the left of a band, and an original arched doorway is present, with a six-panel raised and fielded door and a traceried fanlight. The ashlar is not painted, and there is no cornice.
