Description
Quicksilver Mail is a public house that dates back to the 18th century and has undergone later modifications. It features ashlar Ham stonework and a Welsh slate roof with coped gables, of which two bottom courses of stone slates remain. There are brick chimney stacks at each end, with the one on the southwest side widening at the base, likely for an oven. The building has a two-storey, three-bay facade, with a later central doorway that has five steps leading up to it, topped by a shallow stone hood supported by modern brackets. On the ground floor, there are sash windows on either side of the door, each originally having 20 panes, although the lower glazing bars have been removed. These windows are set in architraves. The three first-floor windows each feature a central 12-pane window with a 4-pane sidelight, all set in raised mullioned surrounds. The interior has not been inspected. The name 'Quicksilver' refers to one of the fastest mail coaches running between London and Exeter in the 1830s, which is said to have changed horses at this location. The building was originally three storeys, but the lowest storey has been buried due to the raising of the road level.
