Description

Bridge Cottage is a cottage located in Bickenhall Village, with late medieval origins and alterations made in 1601, the 18th century, and the mid-20th century. The building features roughcast over rubble and thatched roofs, with a higher roof on the rear wing that has a coped verge extending over the earlier roof. There is a brick stack on the left gable end and at the rear of the wing. The cottage is L-shaped and is said to have been a double-ended, two-bay open hall with a rear extension and a lean-to addition. It has one and a half storeys and three bays, with three three-light dormers rising from the eaves. The right end is gabled and bears the date 1601. The ground floor includes a three-light casement window on the left and a two-light window on the right, along with a thatched, gabled porch set to the right of center. The right return features 20th-century windows, while the left gable end has a projection for a bread oven.

The interior, which has not been seen, is said to contain remains of a cruck truss on the left, which had a framed partition that possibly extended to the ground floor before the insertion of the gable end stack. The central truss is flanked by wind braces, and the right-hand truss in the roof space also has remains of a wattle and daub partition, all of which are smoke blackened. On the ground floor, there are two symmetrically placed openings likely leading to a buttery and pantry. The rear wall of the hall has a possible spice cupboard, while the front wall features two shallow recesses, one fitted with a door and the other with two drawers.
