Description

Pavyotts Mill House is a manor house and former mill house, dating to around 1600, although built upon earlier foundations. It is constructed of ham stone rubble with ashlar dressings, with the south side rendered. The roof is of plain clay tiles with stone base courses, topped with coped gables, and features reconstructed stone chimney stacks. The house is arranged in a "T" shape, with three stories in each of the bays. A single-story lean-to on the west side represents the remains of the former watermill. The windows are ovolo moulded and transomed, with small diamond leaded panes; those in the principal rooms on the ground and first floors of the north wing have four lights, while others have three. The east wing windows are mullioned only, and are smaller. A chamfered arch doorway is located on the north wing. Differences in floor levels suggest the north wing may be from around 1600, with an earlier core to the rest of the building. Orderly plinths and string courses are visible on the north wing, but are erratic on the east wing and no longer present on the south, where the windows are simpler and possibly from the 19th century. The internal structure of arched, chamfered beams is largely intact. There are early doorways of both stone and wood, together with plain chimney pieces. The main staircase has been reconstructed, and the remainder of the interior has been considerably modified. Pavyotts Farm and Farm House, which were within the same ownership in 1981, are not included as part of the listing.
