Description

This is a terrace of workers' housing built in the 18th century. A central stone plaque reads "18 Wilfrid Terrace 85." The terrace is constructed from irregularly coursed and squared rubble with a double-Roman tile roof and brick ridge stacks arranged in groups of four, featuring oversailing courses. It is designed in the Tudor style, with an irregular frontage symmetrical around the center. The two-storey terrace has 2:4:1:1:1:4:2 bays, with projecting gabled wings in the first, third, fifth, and seventh bay sets. These wings incorporate 3 and 4-light stone-mullioned windows, each light fitted with a metal casement. Some windows have dressed stone surrounds and casements, with narrow openings in the gables, some glazed and some fitted with ventilating louvres. The remaining bays feature 3-light casements, with cambered heads on the ground floor windows. A 4-light stone-mullioned window is located at the center of the terrace on the first floor, also with metal casements. A broad, segmental-headed carriageway is set within a chamfered and dressed stone surround. There are twelve door openings with plank doors, some of which have glazed panels. The doors to numbers 1, 11, 13, and 23 are in semi-circular headed dressed stone surrounds. Door openings to numbers 3, 5, 7, 9, 15, 17, 19, and 21 are incorporated into projecting pent-roofed rubble porches, with double Roman tile roofs. The terrace was constructed during a period of significant expansion of the shoe industry in Street, and its attention to detail and spacious planning contribute to the town's character. It has group value with Lawson Terrace.
