Description
Greenbank Swimming Pool is a swimming pool built in 1936 by architects Bancroft Clark and Jack Stock for C. and J. Clark, funded by a bequest from Alice Clark. The structure is made of rendered reinforced concrete and concrete blockwork, featuring a flat roof.
The design includes an entrance block with kiosks on either side of a central entrance, which is flanked by screen walls. This entrance leads down a flight of shallow steps to a semi-circular children's pool and an adjoining rectangular main pool, both surrounded by terraces and dwarf walls. The building showcases the International Modern style.
The exterior features a single-storey symmetrical entrance block with multi-pane metal frame kiosk windows on either side of the wide central entrance, which is approached by a broad flight of steps. To the left and right of the windows are carved stone tablets by Henry Parr. The left tablet reads: "The Gift of Alice Clark to Street May 1937," while the right features a shallow carved relief bust of Alice Clark in a roundel, inscribed with: "Alice Clark of Somerset, born Aug 1874, died May 1934." Above the entrance is the inscription "GREENBANK POOL" in upper case serif lettering. Long flanking screen walls extend from the entrance, and at the rear, the central entrance has a canopy, with a stone clock face on the southeast screen.
The pools, constructed of white painted concrete, were heated using cooling water from the C. and J. Clark factory. In front of the entrance, the wide flight of steps is flanked by late 1950s planting boxes, designed by Oliver Hill and made of brick laid on end. Greenbank Swimming Pool is a notable example of a 1930s lido in the International Modern style and is part of a series of facilities provided by the Clark family for their workers, including quality workers' housing.
