Description
The churchyard boundary wall of the Church of St Andrew, which includes a mechanical gate and a store, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed from Doulting rubble and features weathered coping. The wall forms a boundary that rises irregularly from one metre on the east side to three metres on the west side, where there are two doorways: one with a round arch and the other with a Tudor arch. The northern section of the wall contains a mechanical gate, designed around 1920 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, supported by dressed stone. Each support has a recessed post inclined at 70 degrees to accommodate a second pair of movable wooden posts that are hinged at their base, forming a "V". When these posts are upright, they prevent entry or exit; the left post includes a locking mechanism. There is also a detached post to the north with a horizontally set plank. The store located at the south-west corner is a low rectangular building topped with a plain tile roof, featuring a Tudor arch door opening to the west.
