Description
Monks Corner is a detached house located on a corner site in South Petherton, dating from the 18th century, with possible earlier elements. The building is primarily constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone, with an extension made of red brick in Flemish bond. It features plain clay tiled roofs, some of which have stone slate base courses, and is topped with stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks.
The house has a 'T'-plan layout and stands two storeys tall with attics. The northeast elevation faces Crown Lane but looks down West Street, consisting of three bays, with the third bay being a gabled projection. The upper bays one and two have sash windows with 12 panes set into architraves, while below is an angled bay window with a flat roof that spans both bays. To the right of bay two is a Regency style six-panel door, which is hung on a heavy frame and sheltered by an open stone porch located at the corner. This porch features Tuscan columns and pilasters that support a plain entablature.
The projection of bay three has a blocked gable-end window on the first floor and a two-light casement window in the attic, both with timber lintels. On the southeast face of the return, there are small-pane casement windows; the lower window is from the 20th century, while the upper window is an earlier three-light pattern set under a stone label. The southeast gable includes a hollow-chamfered single-light window in a chamfered recess at attic level, which does not have a label. The north crosswing and west elevation of the main block feature a variety of casement windows, and there are further 20th-century extensions to the west gable of the crosswing. The interior has not been seen.
