Description

The former stables and coach house, located about 20 metres south-east of Avishays, is now used as a garage and garden store. This building dates from the 18th century, possibly 1759, as it resembles the dated north wing of Avishays. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with Ham stone ashlar dressings and hipped Welsh slate roofs. The building has an 'L' plan and is a single storey with dimensions of 5 bays by 3 bays, and one bay deep.

The west elevation, which faces the house, features a plinth and rusticated quoins. The two outer bays have beaded mullioned and transomed 2-light windows set in shallow architraves. Between these windows is a pair of 5-panel doors, also in a matching architrave, topped with a pediment hood supported by console brackets. The north elevation of the return wing consists of 5 bays, with matching windows in bays 2, 4, and 5. There are stable doors in bay 1 and carriage doors in bay 3, which are covered by a cast iron and glass canopy. Adjacent to this doorway is a pump with a lead spout box dated 1724. This building is part of the setting for a distinguished 13th-century house, although the interiors have not been seen.
