Description
Tone Bridge is a large girder bridge built in 1895, designed by J H Smith, which carries the main road north over the River Tone. The roadway is slightly curved and constructed of large girders supported by two rows of circular columns with weatherings. On the outer side, these columns support piers featuring large volutes and shields that display the coat of arms of Taunton Borough. The piers are topped with four impressive double lamp standards adorned with entwined dolphins and scallop shells at their bases, and scrolled foliage on the globe brackets and finials. These globe lamps are noted to be part of the earliest electric street lighting installed in a town in Britain. Good ironwork handrails flank the roadway, featuring turned balusters with crocket capitals and openwork panels similar to those found at the Vivary Park gates. Tone Bridge, along with Nos 5 to 9 (odd) on the Bridge's west side, forms a group.
