Description

Montys Court is a house built around 1840, likely designed by Richard Carver for Sir John Slade. The building features roughcast walls, a stone plinth, Ham stone dressings, and a slate roof. It has a gable front with coped verges and kneelers, and paired octagonal buff brick stacks set on an ashlar plinth. The layout consists of a main block on the left and a recessed service wing on the right, all in a Tudor style. The house is two and a half storeys tall with three bays on the front and three bays on the side.

All window openings are topped with square hoodmoulds and have flat rusticated surrounds. The left side has two and three-light mullioned windows, while the ground floor features three-light mullioned and transomed windows flanking a single-storey castellated porch. The porch has a depressed four-centred arch moulded doorcase with decorative spandrels and panelled double doors, above which is a heraldic achievement with the motto 'Fidus et audax'. The right wing has mullioned four-light windows. The garden front on the left return has a long one-to-three bay design with a full-height canted bay. The interior has not been seen. The house is named after Montys Farm, located to the north. Richard Carver was known to be working for the Slade family at Maunsel, North Newton, and Montys Court in 1844.
