Description
Hele Bridge is a road bridge over the River Tone, likely built in the 15th century and later repaired. In the early 20th century, a rolled steel joist was inserted and the parapet was rebuilt. The bridge is constructed from local stone in random rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a red brick parapet and glazed blue tile coping. It has a three-arch span with four-centred arches that are chamfered in two orders. The central span includes cutwaters, and the abutments are probably rebuilt. The road is supported by rolled steel joists, and the brick parapet has shallow brick piers, with the northwest corner of the parapet rebuilt in the late 20th century. This structure represents a very crude adaptation of a medieval design for modern use.
