Description
The Chaffey and Wood monuments are a pair of chest tombs located about 18 meters north of the chancel at the Church of St Mary the Virgin. They date from the 18th century.
The eastern tomb is the Chaffey monument, made of Ham stone. Its base is buried, and it features one fielded panel on each face, with single-panel pilasters on the sides. The frieze is plain, and it has a moulded coving on the steeply hipped top with rounded leading edges. This monument commemorates members of the Chaffey family who died in the late 17th century and early 18th century.
The western tomb is the Wood monument, also made of Ham stone, with its base buried as well. It has one panel with a wave-mould frame on each face, a slight centre-drop, and fluted pilasters on the sides. The top is hipped with moulded coving and rounded leading edges. This monument commemorates Mary Wood, who died in 1738.
