Description
The Coleman family chest tomb is located about 23 meters east of the entrance to the former churchyard in Bickenhall. This chest tomb dates from the mid-18th century and is made of Ham stone. It features a ledger top with a cyma recta moulded cornice and a moulded plinth. The tomb is inscribed on all faces, with the south side dedicated to Mary, the wife of Richard Coleman, who died in 1754, and the west side to John Bugg, who died in 1757. Although the cornice is slightly damaged and the tomb is partially sunk, the lettering remains in good condition. This tomb is part of a notable group of chest tombs in the former churchyard of Bickenhall Church, which was demolished in 1849 by the rector, the Rev Portman, who rebuilt it closer to his rectory in Staple Fitzpaine.
