Description

An 18th-century mill and miller’s house, located on the south side of High Street in Coleford. The building is constructed of random rubble with dressed quoins, and features coped verges. Roofing materials include plain tiles, pantiles, double-Roman tiles, and some stone tiles to the rear of the miller’s house, with brick stacks. The mill is to the left, and the miller’s house is stepped back to the right, connected by an outbuilding.

The miller’s house is two storeys and an attic, with a mansard roof, and has sash windows in dressed stone surrounds. A central first-floor window has a semi-circular head. The front door is centrally located within a dressed stone surround, with a glazed and panelled door and a stone hood supported by stone brackets. The mill is three storeys tall and has 2 and 3-light stone-mullioned windows, with one ground-floor light blocked. A broad segmental-headed door opening is set within a dressed stone surround, leading to paired plank doors. A loading-bay door, also within a dressed stone surround and featuring a dropped key and divided plank door, is located on the first floor. A leat runs to the rear of the mill. The mill machinery remains intact and was reported to be in working order in August 1985.
