Description
No. 5 Vallis Way is a building dated 1697, featuring 2½ storeys constructed of rubble with a pantile roof. It has a stone chimney on the left with moulded capping and a brick chimney on the right. The building includes two mid-19th century cross-glazed sash dormers with pedimented gables. The windows are arranged irregularly, with three cross mullion windows on the first floor and lower openings fitted with sashes. To the right, there is a monolith bullseye moulded window. A sundial located to the left of centre bears the inscription "Time .... Troth. Ivne i/e 3 ... 1697", referencing the motto "Time Tryeth Troth" associated with Lord Bath and adopted as the town motto of Frome. The ground floor windows were altered in the mid-19th century; to the right is a sash window with block dressings, and to the left is a wide two-light sash with reeded control colonette. The plain central door is accessed by steps. Inside, a winder stair remains above the first floor.
