Description

Rose Cottage and the adjoining cottage, originally a single dwelling, was built in the late 17th century with an 18th-century extension, and has been modified since. The building is constructed of ham stone, cut and squared, with a hipped thatched roof and a central brick chimney stack. The front has a plain lobby entrance, and is two storeys high with five bays, where Rose Cottage occupies bays one and two. The ground floor of bays one and two feature hollow-chamfered mullioned windows in chamfered recesses, sharing a label. These windows have three and four lights respectively. Bay four has a three-light horizontal-bar casement, and bay five has a plain two-light casement. The first floor has horizontal-bar casements, all three-light except for the upper bay three, which is two-light. A 20th-century part-glazed door, sheltered by a timber hood, is located in bay three. Part of bay four has been rendered, and bay five is an addition constructed of local stone with a brick arch over the lower window. An entry to Rose Cottage is located under a thatched hood in the west gable. Inside Rose Cottage, the door to bay three is identified as the original lobby entrance. Features include a stud-and-panel partition between rooms, partially obscured by plasterwork, a wide fireplace with a timber beam, which backs onto a similar fireplace in the adjoining cottage with an oven on the probable site of a former stair. The inner room has a four-panel ceiling with wide chamfers, and the roof is collar-trussed.
