Description

This is an aisled barn located about 50 meters north of Chipley Park, possibly dating back to the 16th century. The barn features a loft over stables at the south end. The aisles have been rebuilt with brick walls, and the south gable end was also rebuilt in brick in the late 19th century. In the late 20th century, there were external alterations and the barn was reroofed with corrugated iron.

The structure is timber framed and cased in red brick, with the south gable end and the north gable end made of brick and timber frame. The roof is hipped and covered with corrugated iron. The barn has a plan that includes seven bays of varying lengths, measuring approximately 100 feet by 40 feet. The land slopes steeply at the south end, where the loft over the stables is located in the end bay.

During a survey in February 1985, the exterior was obscured by ivy, making it only partially visible. The barn features a king post roof, aisle posts set in concrete balks, arch-braced tie beams, and the center and end bays have a single row of wind braces. There is a timber-framed sixth truss at the south end with a loft beyond, and a double entrance in the second and sixth bays that is said to have been rebuilt without porches. This barn is considered a very rare example of an aisled barn in Somerset.
