Description
No 70, known as Gurds, is a mid-19th century building located on the east side of Station Road. It features a gable end facing the street and consists of two storeys plus an attic. The exterior is finished in stucco and topped with an old tile roof that has bargeboards and a finial at the apex. Carved capitals are present at the eaves.
In the attic, there is a single sash window with a plain surround, an ogee hoodmould, and an enriched finial with stops. The first floor boasts a five-light bow window, which is adorned with a miniature balustrade above. Each light of the bow window has a crenellated transom and ogee heads.
The building includes a very good contemporary shop front featuring paterae on the overall fascia and finials on the sides. The fascia is supported by panelled pilasters with crocket capitals, and the fields of the pilasters display painted tiles with classical motifs. The shop fronts have ogee heads and slender colonettes with crocket capitals. A doorway is centrally located, and to the right, there is a low shop window extension with pilasters topped by ball finials.
